Mercury stable isotopes reveal sources of methylmercury and prey in giant Pacific bluefin tuna from the western North Pacific Ocean

چکیده
Sources of methylmercury (MeHg) in adult Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis, PBT) from the western North Ocean (WPO) were examined using mercury stable isotopes. Significant increases δ202Hg and Δ199Hg values with PBT size age, along those potential prey, indicate a shift source MeHg accumulated by as they age. Among adults WPO, this likely involves greater accumulation epipelagic prey Kuroshio extension large vs. small medium-sized PBT. For all adults, little is spawning grounds near Taiwan. Significantly lower Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg ratios their WPO than central eastern different sources or transformations prior to food web further east. Our results show that oceanic webs vary across regionally within WPO.

Mercury sources, distribution, and bioavailability in the North Pacific Ocean: Insights from data and models
[1] Fish harvested from the Pacific Ocean are a major contributor to human methylmercury (MeHg) exposure. Limited oceanic mercury (Hg) data, particularly MeHg, has confounded our understanding of linkages between sources, methylation sites, and concentrations in marine food webs. Here we present methylated (MeHg and dimethylmercury (Me2Hg)) and total Hg concentrations from 16 hydrographic stati...
متن کاملAssessing Sources of Human Methylmercury Exposure Using Stable Mercury Isotopes
Seafood consumption is the primary route of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure for most populations. Inherent uncertainties in dietary survey data point to the need for an empirical tool to confirm exposure sources. We therefore explore the utility of Hg stable isotope ratios in human hair as a new method for discerning MeHg exposure sources. We characterized Hg isotope fractionation between humans ...
متن کاملIncrease in mercury in Pacific yellowfin tuna.
Mercury is a toxic trace metal that can accumulate to levels that threaten human and environmental health. Models and empirical data suggest that humans are responsible for a great deal of the mercury actively cycling in the environment at present. Thus, one might predict that the concentration of mercury in fish should have increased dramatically since the Industrial Revolution. Evidence in su...

[1] Trends and sources of lead (Pb) aerosol pollution in the North Pacific rim of North America from 1850 to 2001 are investigated using a high-resolution (subannual to annual) ice core record recovered from Eclipse Icefield (3017 masl; St. Elias Mountains, Canada). Beginning in the early 1940s, increasing Pb concentration at Eclipse Icefield occurs coevally with anthropogenic Pb deposition in ...
